On October 11th, the "China Population Seminar and NSFC China Population Emergency Research Project Exchange Meeting" jointly organized by the National Center for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Science, the Management Science Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Renmin University of China was held. More than 50 experts from the National Family Planning Commission, the National Bureau of Statistics, the Development Research Center of the State Council, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Renmin University and China Academy of Sciences attended the meeting. The opening ceremony was presided over by researcher Wang Shouyang, director of the Economic and Financial Interdisciplinary Research Department of the National Center for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences and vice president of the School of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Speech by Researcher Wang Yuefei, Deputy Director of the National Center for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences and Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He pointed out that in the late 1970s and early 1980s, a group of well-known scholars, such as Zhu Guangtian and Han Jingqing, supported by the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences of the National Center for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences, cooperated with Academician Song Jian to study the population problem in China, which provided an important decision-making basis for the population "family planning" policy implemented in China 30 years ago. The National Center for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Science attaches great importance to the study of China’s population problem, and takes China’s population problem as one of the important research fields, and starts special research projects in time. He hoped that the population experts attending the meeting would continue to support and strengthen cooperation with the National Center for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Science in the study of population problems in China, and make new contributions to solving the problems faced by the population in China in the future.
Academician Ma Zhiming introduced the background of the meeting and pointed out that the current population problem in China is a major issue that the national decision-makers are particularly concerned about. They directly affect the long-term development of China’s economy and society, and many related issues need to be studied and solved urgently. Yu Jingyuan researcher from 710 aerospace science and technology groups, Professor Chen Gong, deputy director of Peking University Population Research Institute, Professor Zhai Zhenwu, director of China Renmin University Population and Development Research Center, and Yue Tianxiang, researcher from Institute of Geographical Sciences and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, respectively gave special reports. Eight research groups of NSFC China population emergency research project also reported the research progress respectively. Experts at the conference also conducted in-depth discussions on major population-related issues in China.
The meeting was strongly supported by the National Center for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Academician Bureau of China Academy of Sciences.
